Food for Thought

Start the New Year with Good Food Habits & Support Local!

For many of us a new year means a new opportunity take personal inventory and think about goals for the future. My mind always goes to food and how I can find easier ways to use healthier ingredients, while staying on budget, and supporting local as much as possible. The idea of CSA’s always appealed to me because it means getting the freshest produce and supporting local, however when I looked into many of them, I didn’t like that I had to pay for it all up front at the beginning of the season and couldn’t skip weeks if I didn’t need an order.

Toward the end of last year, I reached out to Doorstep Dairy to find out more about their home delivery service of local dairy, produce, and other goodies. I loved that it allowed me to choose my order every week, skip weeks that I didn’t want a delivery, and only pay for what is delivered to my door. Since then, I have been collaborating with them to share about my positive experience with them and how it has really helped me stay on track with eating wholesome food that is locally sourced from Lancaster, Berks, and Chester Counties.

Everything that I have received so far has been fresh, delicious, and satisfying! So far I have been able to try products from these local food vendors:

  • Kreider Farms is a 3rd generation family owned and operated dairy in Manheim, PA. We love getting their fresh milk delivered every week and their chocolate milk is off the hook!
  • Kunzler Bacon is one of my favorites for quiches and casseroles!
  • Nature’s Yoke Eggs is a small family farm in New Holland PA that practices and promotes sustainable farming where their happy free-range chickens produce delicious and wholesome eggs, which we enjoy almost every day!
  • Stoudt’s Wonderful Good Bakery in Adamstown, PA crafts old word artisanal breads and biscotti. Their sourdough loaf is my fave!
  • Sunnyside Pastries East Earl, PA bake scrumptious baked goods from scratch such as whoopie pies, donuts, long-jonhs, fruit pies, cookies, pastries, and breads.
  • Weaver’s Orchard in Morgantown, PA provides the fruit for Doorstep Dairy’s Fruit Box and makes some really great apple cider.
  • Silly Lilly’s Pierogies Sinking Spring, PA hand makes traditional Polish pierogies in a variety of flavors. We love the “Nancy!”
  • Pennland Pure crafts 4 varieties of cheese produced by a cooperative of Lancaster dairy farmers.
  • Sweet Willy’s Honey Sinking Spring, PA provides raw honey locally harvested from hives in Lancaster & Berks Counties.
  • Gooselane Egg Farm is located in Berks county and offers Certified Naturally Grown Produce. They provide most of the produce in the farm shares, which has kept us happily eating fresh local veggies every week!
  • Tried & True Granola Co; offering several varieties of really yummy granola, including my favorite, Triple Treat with white chocolate, coconut, and walnuts!

There is also a bunch of other vendors that I can’t wait to try, including September Farm, Fiddle Creek Dairy, Oasis at Bird-in-Hand, Pequea Vally Farm, Hippy’s Meats, Stone Ridge Beef, and the list goes on.  Doorstep Dairy is always adding to their list of vendors and products.  In February they will begin offering a PA Coffee Roasters Share, with each share spotlighting a different roaster. So far, they have 4 Roasters on the roster: Twin Valley Coffee from Elverson, PA; ‘Feine Coffee from Conshohocken, PA; Benchwarmers Coffee and Donuts from West Reading, PA; and Max Cremates from Shillington, PA.

I have been really happy with the service and products that I have gotten from my Doorstep Dairy deliveries. Every week I get amazing local products delivered to my door, which helps me stress less and keeps me and the whole family eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I plan on staying a customer of Doorstep Dairy to help me make the coming year a healthier and happier one!
